A Christmas Message From Lazy Acre Records

Well… Im bored to tears of hearing about Rage Against The Machine (as cool an achievement as it is), Im sick of the sight of wrapping paper and fishing out the elasticated trousers ready for an influx of Chocolate Orange… that can only mean one thing – its almost Christmas again.

This will pretty much be the last bit of label business I get up to for a couple of weeks – pandemonium us about to descend onto the Acre so we shall doubtless see you in the new year.

2009 has been a strange, productive and very exciting year here on the Acre – our new years resolution to get more organized and generally increase our output / level of proficiency turned out ok in the end…

As well as getting releases out there by all kinds of incredible artists we also made lots of friends in new and exciting places – (hello Oslo, Vienna, Lisbon and all manner of other places!) got back into the swing of this live music shtick and plotted more diabolical plots than the riddler.

Kick started by a genuinely inspiring trip to By:Larm in February we fell in l0ve with so many bands and artists this year that if we released a mixtape every single week we don’t think we could have found room for them all. Luckily we were able to release some of these and this year has seen us getting all excited about awesome releases from the likes of Pipedream, The Little Hands of Asphalt, Kambodsja, The James Magic and Moggz.

As we tiptoe towards next year we can already see a bunch of super exciting releases in the Pipeline from Tessa Frith and Solvor Vermeer to start with, as well as two exciting releases that we cant actually tell you about just yet and lots by artists that we haven’t even met yet…

Crazy times

Hopefully next year will se us improving even further on what has been easily the best of our two years in existence to date.

Before we go we have to offer a genuinely huge thanks to absolutely everyone that’s been involved in the Acre this year. All of our artists, our super talented friends - the merchandising genius of Mrs M, Berkeley “legal eagle” Edwards, our good friends at the Bedford, everyone who has written about one of our releases or played them on your radio show, everyone who has blogged about one of our humble heroes and those of you that have downloaded / bought records and maybe even told your friends – we l0ve you. you’re the reason we get up at 6.30 on a Sunday morning to draft My Little Pony Artwork and you’re the reason we will be back in 2010 doing even more, with a whole of ruck of things so exciting ive had to cover my office chair in wipe-clean plastic sheeting.

Sheeting… haha

Anyway - Have an excellent Christmas everyone – see you next year

For now heres three of the best xmas songs ever

i have no shame

A Postcard from London

Wow

Its strangely soothing to be back in the office this morning, my big chair is much more forgiving to my poor back than the London underground. That said its been a busy and productive few days

Monday night saw The Little Hands of Asphalt (aka Sjur Lyseid) play his first UK show at The Bedford. The show was a show of two halves (literally) but a lot of fun all the same. Thanks to everyone who came down. If you happened to miss it I believe you can still watch the show over at www.thebedford.com. If sjur looks a little tired its because hed spent over three hours on the underground trying to find his hotel

Were getting a recording of the set in the next few days so will keep u posted as we might be able to use them somewhere…

While we were there we filmed a little EPK – like an interview and some live tracks – that we will be putting up here soon – please feel free to seed it on your blogs, facebooks etc

Yesterday was a much too early start (especially after perhaps one red stripe too many on Monday night) but a productive morning of interviews and meetings with various people who are helping us to push Sjur over here in the UK.

In the afternoon yesterday we visited the wonderful folk of Pulse FM just off the strand. Had a great half an hour or so interview with them and played a few songs out. If you missed it you can listen in again over at www.pulse.dj (Sjur was with Rachel between three and half three – the show is called Pet Sounds I think)

Finally yesterday afternoon (after much hot sauce and yet more interviews) we recorded a session for www.balcony.tv up in Camden – recorded a windswept version of Sex & Loneliness before answering some very excitable questions, being told off for calling it the Subway and scampering off in the rain to the tube. TUBE.

Alas with the tube rolling into Euston it was farewell to Mr Lyseid who will hopefully be back in the UK in early 2010 – once hes finished the new Monzano record and got through some festival shows in Feb… we shall be sure to keep you posted of course.

In the meantime we send our eternal thanks to Rachel & Tudor @ Pulse, Layla and greg @ Balcony, all the interviewers that filled our spare hours, Tony & The Bedford team and Berkeley as ever for the hospitality

Ill add some photos to the facebook when I get chance in the week

See you soon

Radio Sampler Now Available

Greetings

One of the upsides of my recent brush wth nature was that it gave me a great deal of time to think of ideas - one of whom hit me about 2am

To be brief – rather than servicing six sets of CDs to radio stations etc I have put together half a dozen of 2010s Lazy Acre Releases in one CD which I can service to stations at the same time

Genius

This particular little nugget features Pipedream, Moggz, Solvor, Little Hands and My Little Pony as well as one Miss Tessa Frith

So then - If you are a DJ / podcaster / Producer etc and would like to get hold of a copy of the CD for consideration for your show please email lazyacrerecords@gmail.com and I will get on out to you - just lemme know the name of the station and the pertinent details

In the meantime I think youll agree the artwork for this little pup is rather excellent.. its all grizzly!

Grrrr

Modest Mouse (or why i didnt get any sleep last night)

Picture the scene:

I was just getting into bed at about eleven o clock last night when suddenly a scream (not mine) ripped through the tranquility of Lazy Towers.

A mouse has appeared from somewhere and having been scared by the scream is now scarpering down the stairs with me in hot pursuit – eventually chasing it into a corner where it disappeared under the fridge.

Now I know that mice are a pain and one of the things you put up with living in an area where I have a river just outside my house and lots of greenery around us, but all the same this mouse caught me as I was getting into bed – that’s personal : that little git was going down

At first I decided id come on all macho (not a look that suits me well) and kick the boards / fridge door etc to scare it into coming out whereupon I could either catch it or explain to it why it couldn’t be here and send him politely on his way.

No Dice.

I remember weve got some traps somewhere from a while back so browsing the internet discover they like chocolate and peanut butter. Easy – theres always chocolate and peanut butter in the cupboard – off I go.

We have no chocolate or peanut butter. All I can find is chocolate ice cream sauce and a bag of peanuts…

Have to do… *heres the weird thing though – I actually caught myself thinking “hmm - I wonder if this will be chocolate-y enough for him –like I give a sh*t! I just want him out!!*

So traps baited I sit on the worktop to wait for it to come out for the bait at which point ive decided im going to whack it with a book when it pokes its head out

He pokes his head out
He Sees me
He Goes back away

Deciding that perhaps a six foot tall man in batman pajama trousers might be a bit scary I decide to hide on the worktop above the fridge so ive got the Arial advantage and he can’t see me

It works

Except he just wanders up to the traps – casual as you like helps himself to a peanut and runs off again… cue much head scratching. I reload the bait and decide to run a plastic strip from the top of the trap to my hand to mean when he goes back I can set the trap off and catch him

Brilliant – it nearly works as well – literally got his little paw out at the last possible fraction of a second and hes off again

Back to square one

I decide to go back to the book idea.

To lure him further out in the open and get a better shot I begin to litter the floor with freshly baked breadcrumbs – it works and soon enough like a sniper ive got a shot on… except throwing as I do- like a girl, I miss again – only by a cm or two but a miss is a miss.

At this point mousey decides to screw this for a game and stays out of site

Two hours I stand guard until finally Ive had enough, sweep up have a smoke and go to bed. 3.15 is late enough to be mouse hunting

Imagine my delight then to wake up this morning and find the smug little git got too cocky with one of the traps and ended up in it whilst I was sleeping

Good times. Although the chocolate spread had set overnight meaning him and the trap were now one and after a couple of gut wrenching yanks and tearing noises to try get him off ive binned the trap too

For all my tiredness though ive gotta salute the little fella – he was a worthy adversary and as a tribute ive posted the below for him

Over and out

Lazy acre vs the eighties (what is it with me and lists just lately?)

Now I know everyone is bang into their 'best of 2009' and 'best of the noughties' lists right now but perversely - I've just been having an argument about the top ten songs of the 80's.

Now I'm not a big 80's fan (a truly terrible time) but there was some great stuff and to confess; I am partial to a bit of cheese - so here is my top ten (thus winning me the argument as kerry doesn't have a blog to publish hers on and if its on the internet it must be true)

*In no particular order*

1 - Echo and the Bunnymen : Killing Moon
2 - Huey Lewis and The News : Power of Love
3 - John Waite : Missing You
4 - Prince : Purple Rain
5 - The Replacements : On the bus
6 - Simple Minds : Alive and Kicking
7 - REM - Its the end of the world as we know it
8 - Fugazi : Waiting Room
9 - Jesus and Mary Chain : Just Like Honey
10 - Nena : 99 Red Balloons

Bubbling under:

I think were alone now, bat out of hell, miss you, mr brownstone, the one and only, law & order theme tune, under pressure, rappers delight, love will tear us apart, blue monday, anything by orange juice, where the streets have no name etc etc etc.

I'd make a spotify playlist for u but honestly I think I've spent enough time on this already. Plus having just confessed to liking a simple minds tune I think its time to go put my head in the bread maker

Much love

"But The future couldn't see me..."

Am currently at a mobile markmeting event although I'm wondering - is there any value in mobile friendly platforms these days? This kernel of a thought hit me on the way here...

With so many phones having full web access these days and so much content being delivered through bespoke apps is that not where the really interesting developments lie?

I am planning the labels movements for next year as we speak and thinkng about mobiles a lot... Any thoughts anyone has feel free to indulge me - lazyacrerecords@gmail.com

Vol 3: the altogether (fox)

Any requests for tracks anyone?

Decisions Decisions Decisions

A few days back someone asked me (and indeed our fine array of artists) if wed put together our top ten records of 2009 for a feature they were writing and honestly I've really struggled to seperate em out.

First up on face value its been a grim year for new music; pixie lott, jedward, a million identikit rappers and milkyway R&B stars and that's without even touching the myriad of pop pap coming out of radio one - the saturdays, jonas brothers, ringtones running riot and the smug grin of simon cowell is never far away

Scratch away though and actually 2009 has been pretty fucking immense - richard walters, simon says no!, lisa hannigan - all of deep elms new signing, blakfish - I could go on and on.

And that's without even taking into account the records that have come out this year bearing our little logo - I sometimes wonder how self serving I can get away with being but ultimatley if I've heard a record and loved it enough to put it out, out of my own pocket and eating up my free time - how much more of a seal of approval can I give something?

I therefore will note now that my own top ten features two of our own releases.

As if all of that wasn't enough to send me scuttling to a corner to rock quietly - then I can't even touch eps which is where I've found some of my favourite tuneage this year.

After many drafts and revisions then, here's the top ten I came up with

*in no particular order*

10 - track a tiger - I felt the bullet hit my heart
9 - kevin devine - brothers blood
8 - kambodsja - marionette you are mine
7 - lisa hannigan - sea sew
6 - richard walters - the animal
5 - blakfish - champions
4 - little hands of asphalt - leap years
3 - iko - ludo says hi
2 - crocodiles - crocodiles
1 - kyte - science for the living

That iko isn't out officially out til 2010 and kyte only came out in japan is of no concern - I'm not foing it again!!

Time for a nice cuppa tea!

Lots of love
Lazy ben x
